The last 3 moths of 2013 have seen an interesting trend for Creation Application – For the first time in our history saw a 30% uplift in enquires from companies looking to roll out BlackBerry Apps. Most of this of course driven from the launch of BB10 and as current apps looking to roll out out their BlackBerry conversions. You just need to check the recent tech press to read the many articles about Blackberry being on the ropes (and in disarray) however I wanted to get an authority external view on what the future is for BlackBerry. The guest post below is written by Tcat (Formally Tim Catuara-Houser) Tcat is highly regarded tech author, writer & commentator who has been around…..well pretty much since the invention of the microchip in the 50’s! He began his digital journey with the launch of the Cold War. A (sometimes) supporter of Mico Soft (2 words back then!) spent much of life as a road warrior on both sides of the pond as a engineer of last resort and technical trainer. Today he lives a quiet rural life and chooses his connections based on quality of life.

With the release of the Version BB10 and the iPhoneish Z10, it is clear the once a wonder firm is coming to a crossroads. Certainly most of us outside of its direct competitors, are hoping this year is a success and not their Waterloo.
The early reviews are coming down as: “ho-hum” for the hardware. Yes, everyone is comparing it to the Apple offerings. I don’t understand that exactly since Android is actually showing up as the market share giant. Perhaps it is because the Droid Crowd is somewhat divided (as Apple likes to point out).
The decision to say ‘no thanks’ to the sale certainly invokes one of two thoughts. Either Thorsten Heins is a genius or an ego maniac.
What Options Exist?
Those that love BlackBerry (formally RIM) can now get secure communications with other hardware platforms so the company has some cash flow to keep from going the way of the carrier pigion. The CEO is asking the faithful to keep the faith a while longer to see greatness.
Assuming the Z10 was the Great Hope, BlackBerry will need a new rope trick to stay in the rodeo. If I was emailing possibilities to Mr. Thorsten I would:
The hardware business is capital intensive. Even the cash flush Microsoft doesn’t actually make their own hardware. They design and outsource the soldering. Even that has been a mixed bag for the Redmond boys. iCupertino farms out to Foxconn. Heck, a bunch of folks farm-out building to Foxconn. Samsung is a viable alternative to Foxconn. They are HUGE. Samsung builds its own ships to carry those Galaxy Tablets across that Giant Pond.
Only Samsung is large enough to make a phone with a screen size that is 3.14159 inches in size, to test the theory that it will sell enough phones to math geeks. Since they make everything from the semiconductor to the ship that will haul the phone, they have a different barrier to entry. BBN has very secure software for communications. Heck, it’s good enough for the Commander of the largest pile of nukes on the planet. If its good enough for #1 in nukes, why not talk to #1 in hardware? Qualcomm!
[blockquote sc_id=”sc1387206247571″]In this marriage possibility, Polygamy is legal.”[/blockquote]
BBN could also bring Qualcomm to the wedding as a partner. With IoT a reality, why not bring in Qualcomm ?
I don’t have a crystal ball with a direct connection to hades. And I do know that Qualcomm owns virtually 100% of the chips used in the 4G market (Sorry TMC).
If the Canadian firm wants to say in the hardware game, this marriage could leave iEgo an iNiche.
Having met Bill G. in 1973, I have watched how he deftly became Emperor of Planet Earth. While I honor my NDA’s, I can say even the DOJ thought he wasn’t always above board.

He swung a Big Bat with zero’s and one’s all arranged with attitude to become bigger than Caesar. BBM could do that too.
Let’s take it like it is. I’ve grown up in this game. I even remember Tube (Valve) based computers and got the programming manual to prove it. That could really mean I’m such a friggin fossil I can’t see what’s goin on. I believe in crowd sourced IQ. Please contribute to the thoughts. We could be Borg For Good for BBM.
